INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM OF INFORMATION AWARD
2008 Intellectual Freedom of Information Award
Kristie Michalowski is our recipient of the 2008 Georgia Library Media Association/ProQuest Intellectual Freedom of Information Award. Ms. Michalowski is the library media specialist at Magill Elementary, Gwinnett County Schools.

Georgia Library Media Association (GLMA) and ProQuest, and jointly sponsor the Intellectual Freedom of Information Award. The award recognizes the contributions of a school library media specialist who has affirmed in an active way the rights of students to information and ideas furthering the cause of intellectual and academic freedom. This award is donated by ProQuest® and will be given at the COMO Annual Conference.
Nature of the award
The GLMA/ProQuest Intellectual Freedom Award is given to the most innovative and effective freedom of information project covering a school or school district. Programs may be one-time or ongoing/multi-year efforts.
The award consists of
1. A plaque with the recipient's name and a monetary gift certificate.
2. The recipient will be recognized and honored at the site of the award presentation-COMO.
Selection criteria
1. The recipient shall be a Pre-K-12 personal member of GLMA.
2. The recipient shall meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Has developed and implemented an exemplary innovative information program on intellectual freedom
- Has developed and implemented an exemplary school selection policy or handbook emphasizing freedom of information
- Has developed a structured procedure for handling a challenge or intellectual freedom crisis within the school
- Has upheld intellectual freedom principles in the face of a challenge
- Has contributed to the literature of the field (print or non-print)
- Has been active in the establishment and/or continuation of a program or activity relating to intellectual freedom at the local, state or national level
- Has not received another ProQuest sponsored Intellectual Freedom Award in the past two years
3. At least one supporting letter of reference must accompany the application form. The reference must substantiate that the applicant has upheld the principles of intellectual freedom and has met at least one of the above criteria. This letter may be submitted by:
- system library media supervisors, lead library/media specialists, directors or coordinators
- state, county, or district school superintendents, building principals, headmasters, or local board member
- directors of curriculum and instruction or educational supervisors
- a GLMA member
4. Documentation (Examples)
Examples might include a school or district public relations initiative to promote awareness of intellectual freedom, programmatic assistance to meet a censorship challenge, a building or education outreach effort to ensure intellectual freedom of information. Documentation may include videotapes, scrapbooks, handbook of policies/procedures, programs, and newspaper.
Selection process
Please submit five (5) copies of the Nomination form with Supporting Materials postmarked no later than November 30, 2009.
