Time for Year End Inventory

It’s that time of the school year when many of us are faced with the task of completing an inventory of our school library media centers’ resource collections. But beyond this physical accounting, a year-end inventory of professional performance is in order.

Are you a “Highly Qualified” school library media specialist? NCLB describes a highly qualified teacher as one who has “obtained full State certification as a teacher or passed the State teacher licensing examination, and holds a license to teach in such State.” Licensed school library media specialists are trained as classroom teachers and as a specialist in the subject area of information literacy. School library media specialists are among the 24 subject-area specializations eligible for national board certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. So then it certainly appears, then that we fit the NCLB definition of highly qualified teachers.

Inventory questions:

  • Have you created a collaborative environment to integrate the school library media program into the school curriculum?
  • Have you shared your expertise in project-based learning and authentic assessment with your faculty and students?
  • Do you communicate regularly with parents and community about the library media program?
  • Do you have an articulated information literacy curriculum and grade-level benchmarks that include research and technology skills that are aligned to the Georgia Performance Standards?

A great way to see how you and your media program measure up is to visit http://www.glc.k12.ga.us/pandp/media/files/Rubric_2008_October_2007.pdf for the Georgia DOE Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric.
When teachers and library media specialists collaborate, differentiated instruction becomes more feasible, and student achievement rises.

Welcome to the Spring NewsLeader!

As the school year winds down I start thinking about what I may do differently for next year and start planning for the Georgia Children’s Book Award and Georgia Peach Books for Teen Readers book talks. The summer is a time of rest and recuperation from a busy year but also a time to recharge the batteries by sharing ideas and learning from others. The GLMA Summer Institute is a great professional development opportunity to share and learn from others and glean ideas for next year. See you there!
